Camellias

With the days being shorter, consider planting a camellia. Camellias brighten the darker days of the year with stunning blooms and a slight fragrance. In summer, when finished with the work of blooming, camellia's evergreen leaves and strong stature make great habitat plants for wildlife. Hummingbirds feed on winter flowers and thick foliage provides cover for critters.

Camellias are attractive throughout the year and pair well with Hydrangeas and Rhododendrons for a full year of color in the garden. Their glossy, dark green foliage and semi-weeping habit make for a fantastic foundation or background plant.

Plant them in slightly acidic soil and protect from hot afternoon sun.

Camellia sasanqua
Camellia sasanqua

Camellia sasanqua flowers can be single or semi-double and come in shades of white, pink, red and variegated.

C. sasanqua is usually a smaller growing shrub than C. japonica, reaching not more than 2-10’ tall, depending upon the variety.

Often called the winter blooming camellia, Camellia sasanqua blooms from late fall into early spring. Many of the varieties are fragrant.

Camellia japonica

The most widely grown camellia. It is a naturally small tree or shrub, usually growing only to 6-12 feet but with age may reach up to 20 feet.

Depending upon the variety, peak blooming time occurs between December and May.

Flowers are single, double, peony or rose form and come in shades of white, pink, red and variegated.

Camellia sinensis

Also known as the Tea Plant, Tea Camellia leaves are used to make green and black teas. White or pink flowers appear in October and have a light sweet scent.
