  1. Light: Orchids love bright, indirect light. Place them near a window with filtered sunlight, but avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves.

  2. Watering: Orchids have unique watering needs. Allow the top inch of the potting medium to dry out between waterings. Then, water the plant thoroughly, ensuring excess water drains out of the pot.

  3. Humidity: Orchids thrive in humid environments. Increase humidity by placing a tray of water near the plant or using a humidifier. Avoid misting the leaves directly, which can cause fungus to grow.

  4. Potting Medium: Use a well-draining orchid potting mix that allows airflow to the roots. Avoid using regular potting soil, as it retains too much moisture. You can purchase ‘Uni-Gro Orchid Bark’ in the Greenhouse at WSN.

  5. Temperature: Orchids prefer moderate temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C).

  6. Fertilization: Feed your orchids regularly with a balanced orchid fertilizer to provide them with essential nutrients. You can purchase ‘Liquid Orchid Food’ or ‘Organic Orchid! Bloom Booster’ in the Greenhouse at WSN. Be sure to follow the package instructions for proper dilution and frequency.

  7. Repotting: Orchids need repotting every 1-2 years. Repot when the potting medium breaks down or the plant outgrows its current pot. Bring your plant in to WSN to upgrade your orchid’s pot and have one of our staff members do the repotting!

  8. Pruning: Trim yellow or dead leaves and flower spikes to maintain the plant's appearance and encourage new growth.

With a little care and attention, your orchids will reward you with their exquisite blooms. Follow these basic care tips, and you'll be on your way to cultivating healthy and vibrant orchids in your own home or garden. Happy orchid growing!
