Gardening in the Age of Coronavirus: the Vegetable Garden Stories

Originally published in September, 2020

We're continuing our series of stories submitted by our customers about their gardening adventures this year. This week, we are featuring vegetable gardeners.

Growing lots of new (to me) varieties of tomatoes this year! Growing cherry tomatoes, Romas, several heirloom, and Black Russian tomatoes.

Now to determine when those beauties are ripe enough for tasting!

Story #2 My Vegetable Journey!

This was my first time putting in a vegetable and herb garden at the ripe young age of 70!!! I purchased two of each from West Seattle Nursery - patti-pan squash, burpless cucumbers, Indigo Rose cherry tomatoes, Red Sage, Basil, Lemon Thyme, Cilantro - and one Alpine Strawberry.

I quickly realized that single plants would have been PLENTY for my raised garden beds, and the squash threatened to take over the neighborhood!!! We've been eating lovely cucumbers (made into a family recipe with sour cream, vinegar, sugar, salt and pepper ladled over cooked potatoes), cilantro in chicken chili, fish tacos and pork burritos, and I cooked the squash in a big pan with sauteed shallots and curry powder.

We are impatiently waiting for the cherry tomatoes to ripen and it looks like we'll have a bumper crop. I've also made the most delicious pesto with the basil.

So my first attempts have been loads of fun and mostly successful. A thousand thanks for a fun quarantine adventure!!

Story #3 - Another First-time Gardener

Yes, I’m a cliche, quarantine, first-time gardener and I love it! What a fun way to spend much needed time outdoors and what a fantastic way to learn about the world of veggies, flowers and grasses. Thanks to the University of YouTube and Google, somehow stuff grew and it’s been an amazing journey. I’m in!

Here are a few sample photos of the journey.

Cheers & be well,

Jolie V.
